CWR is proud to welcome Rhys Astles as the second apprentice to join its Fleet Services team, embarking on a 3-year Advanced Commercial Vehicle Technician Apprenticeship. Rhys, who began his journey with us last month, has joined the Winsford workshop via Remit Automotive Academy and is already making a strong impression.
Under the expert mentorship of Scott Lister, Rhys is gaining valuable, practical experience across a wide range of maintenance projects and repairs. From routine servicing and brake systems to more complex tasks like gearbox replacements, he’s working with the team and diving into the daily challenges of a busy fleet operation.
“I’m already getting a good feel for what it’s like to play a role in the CWR workshop,” says Rhys. “From brakes and servicing to replacing a gearbox, I’m being given the chance to learn and get hands-on experience in a really supportive environment.”
Rhys joins CWR at the very start of his career, bringing with him an introductory qualification in Automotive Maintenance & Repair and a strong enthusiasm to learn. With a growing interest in heavy goods vehicles, he sees this apprenticeship as the ideal platform to build on his early skills and gain real-world experience.
“I’m learning so much every day and I’m really enjoying working on the different types of vehicles in the fleet – from CWR’s own vehicles to the Council’s, including gritters and community buses. I’ve stripped a car engine in the past, and I’d love to work on a big engine with the team.”
His mentor, Scott Lister, understands the value of apprenticeships firsthand – having started his own career through a similar path. He believes programmes like these are essential, not only for individual career development but also for the industry as a whole.
“Apprenticeships are not only a brilliant way for young people to get started and improve their career prospects, but they’re hugely important for the industry too. Skilled HGV mechanics are in short supply and apprenticeships are a key solution, helping to close that gap and keep the UK’s supply chain running smoothly. It’s great to have Rhys on the team.”
Rhys has already demonstrated a strong work ethic, eagerness to learn, and a positive attitude – qualities that have helped him settle in quickly and thrive.
“He’s a fast learner with a great attitude,” says Scott. “He’s working really hard, is eagerly absorbing new knowledge and has a solid team ethic. It’s great to have him on board.”
CWR is committed to supporting the next generation of talent and remains dedicated to fostering career opportunities through high-quality apprenticeships. Rhys’s journey is just beginning, and we’re excited to see all that he will accomplish in the years ahead.
